England striker Wayne Rooney will definitely miss the start of their World Cup campaign in Germany with a broken right foot. Manchester United said on Friday that a scan showed the metatarsal break was healing as expected but another would be needed on June 14 to see if Rooney will be fit to play.
England have been dealt a major blow on Friday morning.
Manchester United announced the results of the young forward's scan and the verdict isn't encouraging. Rooney looks set to miss at least the first game of England's World Cup campaign against Paraguay.
"Manchester United has received the results from Wayne Rooney's CT scan performed yesterday and can confirm findings consistent with an injury four weeks old," United said.
"His injury is progressing as expected and we now hope to gradually increase his rehabilitation as planned."
England seem plagued with an injury epidemic, as substitute goalkeeper Robert Green had to pull out of the squad on Thursday due to a groin injury.
Rooney was injured in a Premier League match at Chelsea on April 29.
Thursday's scan followed weeks of anxious speculation about Rooney's chances of joining the squad in Germany, where England are bidding for their first major trophy since winning the World Cup in 1966.
England kick off their Group B matches against Paraguay in Frankfurt on June 10. They also face Trinidad & Tobago in Nuremberg on June 15 and Sweden in Cologne on June 20.
Now it will be down to the remainig fit players in the squad to raise their game and secure a place in the second round, with the hope to see Rooney able to take some part on the field in this summer's tournament.
There is still hope however, as the United forward could be back intraining in a mere three weeks' time. But for Sven Goran Eriksson, the main thing is that Rooney travels to Germany with the squad:
"This is very encouraging news. I'm looking forward to Wayne joining up with the rest of the squad on Sunday. The fact that he is flying out to Germany with us will give everyone a huge lift."
Rooney has been vital to England's attack since becoming the youngest player to play for his country as a 17-year-old in 2003 and going on to become its youngest scorer later that year in a Euro 2004 qualifier.

Brazil's World Cup keeper Dida has preached forgiveness for Moacir Barbosa who was vilified after Brazil lost the 1950 final to Uruguay. Barbosa was in goal when World Cup Host Brazil were hot favourites to win, were beaten 2-1 in front of a shocked crowd of nearly 200,000 fans at Maracana stadium.
"Barbosa was crucified for that final and it's sad that we remember him just for that moment," Dida told reporters on Saturday.
"In fact, he made a lot of great saves and he did a lot to help the Brazilian team and he should also be remembered for that, not just for one game which marked his life for ever."
Barbosa, who died in 2000 at the age of 79, said he had been condemned to a life sentence for Brazil's most bitter defeat.
"Brazilian law doesn't permit a sentence of more than 30 years, but I've been in prison for 50 years now," he said shortly before his death.
Brazil and Uruguay were drawing 1-1 when Barbosa misread Chico Ghiggia's intentions and the Uruguayan scored between the goalkeeper's leg and the near post 11 minutes from time.
Dida, a reserve at the last two World Cups, has been named as first choice for the tournament in Germany and is set to play his first game in a finals against Croatia on June 13.
"My dream has always been to play at the World Cup and now I'm close to fulfilling that," he said. "But I don't just want to play at the World Cup, I want to win it as well."

The only real surprise of the Los Angeles Auto Show was the wacky GX3, the second small and athletic but eco-friendly concept to come from Volkswagen--the first was the EcoRacer from the 2005 Tokyo motor show. The roofless, three-wheeled GX3--which is essentially the lovechild of the EcoRacer and a street bike--is even more basic than the Tokyo concept, with motorcycle-style headlights, no windshield, composite body panels, and twin roll bars into which are set LED taillights. The GX3's two passengers sit shoulder-to-shoulder in the doorless, roofless cabin protected by racing-style harnesses but, um, no hint of air bags.
Wolfgang Bernhardt drove the GX3 out, proving that it is a runner. It is powered by a barely muffled, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mounted transversely behind the seats that sends its 125 hp and 112.5 lb-ft of torque to the chain-driven, foot-wide rear tire via a six-speed manual transmission. Volkswagen claims the 1257-lb trike can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds and get 46 mpg (presumably not at the same time). Even more impressive is the GX3's claim of 1.25g cornering capability.
As crazy as it looks, the GX3 is remarkably well wrought for a concept, which leads us to our favorite part: according to Bernhardt, it may actually be produced as soon as 2007, at a price that of less than $17,000, if customer reaction is positive enough. Furthermore, as a motorcycle-style vehicle, VW says, the GX3 would be cleared for solo driving in California's HOV lanes--a la hybrid cars--making it a commuter's dream come true. However, being in the motorcycle class, it would require a motorcycle driver's license to operate. And yes, one would have to wear a helmet in states with helmet laws; a small price to pay for such big fun. No, we can't believe it either, but camouflaged GX3s have been seen running on German test tracks, which seems to hint at a production future. Can it be true?

Volkswagen calls the Concept A “the child of a new era,� but we think a more likely parent has to be the Hyundai HCD-9 Talus Concept shown at January’s Detroit show. Both feature all-wheel drive, suicide rear half-doors, huge wheels, and styling that blurs the line between SUV and sports car (as well as between Volkswagen and Hyundai.) But unlike Hyundai and the countless other coupe-truck creators, Volkswagen will be putting a vehicle similar to the Concept A into production within the next few years. The new model will most likely be based off the Golf platform and will fit in the VW line-up under the Touareg. The rear doors of the concept are pretty cool, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the production version sports four front-hingers. The Concept A uses the new 1.5-liter Twincharger engine, but the upcoming model, possibly called the Marrakesh, will also put VWs lovely 2.0-liter FSI Turbo and a diesel to use. This is a cool-looking truck, and we are excited to see the final product when it comes on the scene in 2007.

While Mazda continues to develop its fascinating gas/hydrogen-powered rotary RX-8 (it should be available in Japan in 2006), it showed something even more advanced at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, a rotary hybrid version of the latest Mazda 5.
In the nose of this 5, Mazda mounted the same bi-fuel, two-rotor hydrogen RENESIS as the impending RX-8--the first time it's been demonstrated in a front-drive application.
The rotary engine links to a Mazda-developed hybrid unit, which is also in the nose. There are two fuel tanks: gas beneath the rear seat (a battery array also resides there) and a hydrogen tank in the back, replacing the third row of seats.
In this way, the Mazda 5 can run either on hydrogen or gasoline--just like the dual-fuel RX-8--and you can switch between the two using a small button on the dash.
Mazda's idea with this alternatively powered 5 is to expand the range of models in which a hydrogen rotary potentially can be used, and this car is a better fit than the RX-8 for the bi-fuel hardware because of its larger size; the hydrogen tank fills up nearly all of the RX-8's small trunk.

Un adolescent visator, fermecat de magia povestilor fantastice, caruia la 15 ani i-a venit ideea de a scrie un roman asa cum i-ar fi placut lui sa citeasca. Ceea ce la inceput fusese un hobby, fara nici o intentie de publicare, a devenit peste doi ani prima carte din trilogia intitulata "Mostenirea: Eragon", un roman in cea mai buna traditie a trilogiei "Stapanul inelelor".
POVESTEA. Cartile spun povestea unui erou arhetipal care isi urmeaza destinul, mistuit de un secret teribil. Alagaesia este o imparatie imaginara condusa de tiranul Galbatorix, care domneste peste oameni simpli, eroi mitici, elfi si urgali monstruosi – o lume plina de mister si primejdie. Actiunea este trepidanta, iar scenele de lupta amintesc de Tolkien. Dar nu lipseste insa nici frumoasa fata, care nu este atat de neajutorata pe cat pare.

ÃŽn lumina ochiului, vânătorul de altădată deosebea, cu inima bătând, trei ori patru lebede, care pluteau solemn. Mirajul, sporind depărtarea şi volumul, le făcea să semene cu nişte galiote antice sosite din ţara Tainei în apele de la Cristeşti. Vânătorul cel vechi le privea îndelung, fără să le tulbure - ca pe una din minunile sacre ale naturii.â€Â?
Fragmente ca acesta din povestirea “Vânătoarea, acum o sută de ani, în Moldovaâ€Â?, din volumul “Ţara de dincolo de negurăâ€Â? (1926), se regăsesc peste tot în această carte: “aburi uşoriâ€Â?, “înşelătoareâ€Â?, “iluziaâ€Â?, “retrageri misterioaseâ€Â?, “mirajulâ€Â?, în sfârşit “minunile sacreâ€Â? - acesta este arsenalul de care Mihail Sadoveanu, un adevărat dascăl în ale misterului, se serveşte pentru a-şi iniţia cititorii într-o lume de vis, “ţara Taineiâ€Â?.
Copil fiind, citisem “Dumbrava minunatăâ€Â? şi plânsesem cu Lizuca, ori mă mângâiasem cu prezenţa lui Patrocle. ÃŽmi aduc aminte şi de Panciuc, din povestirea cu acelaşi nume, curajosul rezervist care, în războiul de independenţă, şi-a salvat cu preţul vieţii prietenul rănit. ÃŽnainte de a mă întâlni cu Tudor Şoimaru, cu Ionuţ Jder, ori cu personajele din “Hanu Ancuţeiâ€Â? în lecturile de liceu, am avut ocazia chiar de a-l asculta pe Sadoveanu: aveam un disc cu poveşti de-ale lui Creangă, citite extraordinar de scriitorul din Paşcani şi ascultate de zeci de ori de copiii care eram.
La 5 noiembrie s-au împlinit 125 de ani de la naşterea prozatorului (1880-1961). Anii din urmă au arătat şi aspecte întunecate din biografia lui Sadoveanu, aflat în fruntea masoneriei române ori la conducerea Marii Adunări Naţionale. E tristă această duplicitate şi fractură între talent şi moralitate. Dar nu aceste taine tenebroase doresc să le evoc, ci pe cele luminoase.
ÃŽn “Neamul Şoimăreştilorâ€Â?, publicat între 1912-1913, roman complex în care evocarea istorică a domniei lui Ştefan Tomşa se împleteşte cu povestea înstrăinatului oştean Tudor Şoimaru, reîntors să-şi găsească rădăcinile, regăsim aceleaşi hotare tainice:
“Se opri şi Şoimaru, simţind, în tăcerea care-i împresură deodată, ca o înfiorare tainică cuprinzându-i pe amândoi. O privighetoare îşi ascuţi parcă de câteva ori glasul într-o tufă din apropierea lor; apoi, în tăcerea văii, rămase ca o bătaie surdă şi depărtată, necontenită, ca şi cum lucrători necunoscuţi băteau pământul cu maiurile în adâncimile singurătăţii.

- Cânii de apă!… zise fata râzând şi privindu-l ţintă. Şi eu i-am văzut… Şi i-am auzit de multe ori din locul acesta… Aici e frumoasă şi tainică pădurea de mesteceni…

După urmărirea şi lupta cu vatamanul Vasca, Şoimaru şi tovarăşii lui reuşesc să o elibereze pe Magda Orheianu, de care oşteanul se îndrăgosteşte năprasnic, neştiind că între ei se află sângele lui Ionaşcu, tatăl lui Tudor, ucis de tatăl Magdei. ÃŽn acest fragment, cei doi tineri, călărind în faţa celorlalţi, se apropie de locurile lor natale. Un aspect de bază al conturării ţării Tainei este legătura dintre nou - iubirea celor doi tineri - şi vechi - amintirea comună a castorilor din vremurile copilăriei. Registrul sonor este fundamental aici: tăcerea parcă naşte “înfiorarea tainicăâ€Â?, urmată de cântecul scurt al privighetorii; “tăcerea văiiâ€Â? se cadenţează apoi cu bătăile surde ale cozilor castorilor, “ca şi cum lucrători necunoscuţi băteau pământul cu maiurile în adâncimile singurătăţiiâ€Â?, pereche exterioară a bătăilor inimii din piepturile celor doi. Dialogul reţinut nu face decât să identifice experienţa comună a celor doi îndrăgostiţi şi să numească, în cuvintele Magdei, perechea nedespărţită a tainei, frumuseţea: “Aici e frumoasă şi tainică pădurea de mesteceni…â€Â? ÃŽn acest cadru cei doi vor schimba primele săruturi.
“La răsărit se deschisese o poartă de rubin. Deasupra ei suia pe cerul verde ca ghiaţa flacăra care se chiamă Steaua Ciobanului. Vântul contenise. ÃŽntinderile către zări erau albe. Peste baltă se durase pod de argint. Zvonurile căzuseră la pământ şi stăpânea peste toate numai puterea de cremene a gerului. Acest farmec se săvârşise în răstimpul cât ţine un somn. Ionuţ ieşi în larg şi-şi boldi ochii asupra acestei lumi nouă peste care fulguiau lin trandafiri de zori.â€Â?
Aceste rânduri parcă ar fi luate dintr-o poveste: “poarta de rubinâ€Â?, “cerul verde ca ghiaţaâ€Â?, “podul de argintâ€Â? conturează o lume unde aşteptăm din clipă în clipă apariţia unei zâne. Ca în fragmentul anterior, liniştea e fundalul pe care poate fi admirat acest cadru feeric: “Zvonurile căzuseră la pământ şi stăpânea peste toate numai puterea de cremene a gerului.â€Â? Prozaicul nu-şi are loc aici: Steaua Ciobanului nu e un astru, ci o “flacărăâ€Â?; zorii zilei au dubla consistenţă a fulgilor de nea şi a petalelor de trandafir, iar omul nu poate decât să deschidă ochi muţi de admiraţie în faţa acestui “farmecâ€Â?: “Ionuţ ieşi în larg şi-şi boldi ochii asupra acestei lumi nouă peste care fulguiau lin trandafiri de zori.â€Â? Dar nu ne aflăm în faţa unei poveşti, ci a romanului “Fraţii Jderâ€Â? (1935-1942), iar oşteanul care e cel mai mic dintre fiii comisului Manole nu se pierde în visare, ci de îndată dă poruncă de plecare.
ÃŽnchei cu un fragment din “Zodia Cancerului sau vremea Ducăi-Vodăâ€Â? (1929):
“Dar dintrodată, brusc, ca şi cum s-ar fi tras o perdea, codrul se desfăcu în dreapta şi-n stânga şi, în lumina lunii atârnate în cer, sclipi o poiană largă din toate ierburile ei udate de ploaie. Izbucniră mugete. Umbre se mişcară năprasnic şi, cu salturi agile, pieiră sub bolţile de întuneric în partea dimpotrivă.
- Aiştia-s boii pădurii, zise Griga întorcând capul şi sticlindu-şi dinţii în lună.
- Ce este? întrebă, mişcat, de Marenne.
- Am tulburat păşunea zimbrilor, răspunse Alecu Ruset.
Abatele se simţi pătruns de un simţământ de evlavie, privind minunea dumnezeirii, într-o clipă strălucită şi fără păreche în eternitate.

Apariţia tainică a zimbrilor este pregătită regizoral. Codrul adânc înfipt în pământ capătă mlădieri de cortină - “codrul se desfăcu în dreapta şi-n stângaâ€Â?, lăsând să se vadă, în lumina lunii, fundalul: “sclipi o poiană largă din toate ierburile ei udate de ploaieâ€Â?. “Actoriiâ€Â? nu-şi fac apariţia de îndată, ci-şi anunţă prezenţa sonor: “Izbucniră mugete.â€Â? ÃŽnsă privitorii nu vor avea parte decât de o apariţie fugară: “Umbre se mişcară năprasnic şi, cu salturi agile, pieiră sub bolţile de întuneric în partea dimpotrivă.â€Â? Dar Sadoveanu nu descrie o scenă de teatru. După identificarea umbrelor cu “boii păduriiâ€Â?, beizade Ruset traduce intrarea călăreţilor ca pe o intruziune - “Am tulburat păşunea zimbrilorâ€Â?, iar reacţia abatelui de Marenne nu e a unui spectator, ci a unui credincios care e surprins de o viziune în această catedrală silvestră unde bolţile sunt “de întunericâ€Â?, iar luna e “atârnată în cerâ€Â? ca o candelă: “Abatele se simţi pătruns de un simţământ de evlavie, privind minunea dumnezeirii, într-o clipă strălucită şi fără păreche în eternitate.“
